Q & A

Who is at risk of developing ear infections?

Children are more likely than adults to develop ear infections. A child’s immature eustachian tubes are narrower and more horizontal, making drainage difficult, so they’re more likely to get clogged. The eustachian tubes connect the ear to the nose and throat. Children are also more likely to injure their necks playing, falling and playing sports which can lead to ear problems.

Bacteria cause ear infections. When drainage isn’t efficient, the bacteria have a chance to take hold. This results in swelling of the nasal passages, eustachian tubes, and throat.

While children are most likely to develop an ear infection, adults with a weak immune system, inflammation, or any structural irregularities in the ears/neck are also at risk of developing ear infections.

What are the symptoms of ear infections?

Ear pain, trouble hearing, and fluid drainage from the ear are adult symptoms of ear infections. The ear may feel tender or appear slightly swollen. Severe ear infections can even cause fever, headache, and nausea.

Children suffering from ear infections aren’t always able to articulate their symptoms, but you may suspect an ear infection if you notice:

  • Tugging or pulling at an ear
  • More frequent crying and fussiness
  • Trouble hearing
  • Loss of balance
  • Fever of 100℉ or greater
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fluid drainage from the ear

If your child is old enough to tell you about an ear infection, they may complain of pain in their ear that worsens when they lie down.

How can a chiropractor treat ear infections?

Traditional medical care aims to resolve the symptoms and primary infection associated with an ear infection. Chiropractic care offers a natural, noninvasive alternative to antibiotics and minor surgery.

By adjusting the upper vertebrae in the spine, chiropractic care creates a cascade of healing that alleviates the symptoms of an ear infection. Adjustments can trigger the nerves in the upper cervical region to influence the muscles around the eustachian tube. Adjustments also relieve the tension between the inner ear and the cervical vertebrae.

Chiropractic adjustments help the muscles surrounding the ears and head relax, allowing the ears to drain normally.
